Spain wins World Cup 1-0 in overtime

Although not the prettiest or well played game in World Cup history, it was a World Cup Final game nonetheless.

13 yellow cards were distributed.

The theatrics were set: 0-0 through two halves, a nail biting overtime, close goals, and emotions running higher than one can imagine.

Yet the Spanish team, led by head coach Vicente del Bosque, did not let it intimidate them and defeated the Netherlands to earn World Cup Immortality.

The game went scoreless for the first two halves, despite so many close goals, leading to a nail biting overtime. In the 116th minute, Andres Iniesta, the unlikely hero, scored a picture perfect goal that was just out of the reach of Dutch goalie Maarten Stekelenburg. Iniesta ripped off his jersey and ran around the field, mobbed by his teammates.

"We have all done an incredible job," Iniesta said. "I don't think we even realize what we have done."

"This is immeasurable for Spain," Del Bosque said.

The game finally ended, and Spain was victorious with a close 1-0 win. The team gathered on the podium to receive the World Cup trophy, which was placed immediately in the hands of Spain's captain and goalkeeper Iker Casillas. After a quick photo, they took a victory lap for the final time at Johannesburg.

"It's the most beautiful that there is. It's spectacular," Iniesta said.

For the Netherlands, it was their third World Cup Final defeat, the first two coming in 1974 and 1978. Soccer City was painted orange for the Netherlands team, however the end result was not what the faithful had hoped.

Spain won the European Title two years ago, but one can imagine that the World Cup Championship tops it all.

At long last the World Cup Quest has ended, and with a new champion. Congratulations to Spain.

Spain will try to defend their World Cup title for the next Cup, scheduled to be in the year 2014 in Brazil.

See you there.
