- The Washington Capitals signed young center Nicklas Backstrom to a 10 year, $67 million dollar deal today. Their goal is to continue to build a nucleus around star winger Alex Ovechkin. ESPN.

- According to ESPN's rumor mill (subscription required), the Pittsburgh Penguins and New Jersey Devils may be discussing a trade that would send Penguins center Evgeni Malkin to the Devils in exchange for star left wing Zach Parise. It's only a rumor though for now.
